The Short Answer
Stay on the quiet streets between Museumplein and Vondelpark, such as the Jan Luijkenstraat and the Van de Veldestraat. You can walk to the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum in minutes and be in the park before breakfast. Our pick is Jan Luyken Amsterdam, a townhouse hotel with a small spa.
The Conservatorium is the splurge, right by Museumplein. The Marriott and Park Centraal on the Stadhouderskade are closer to Leidseplein's restaurants and nightlife, with busier roads outside. On a budget, Hotel Van Gogh is next to the museum of the same name, and the Stayokay hostel sits at the park entrance.
The Museum Quarter's Areas Compared
| Area | Best for | Downsides |
|---|---|---|
| Streets off Museumplein | Museums on foot, quiet nights | Few restaurants open late |
| Stadhouderskade and Leidseplein side | Trams, nightlife, the Rijksmuseum | Busy main road |
| Vondelpark edge | Running, picnics, families | A walk or tram to the canals |
| South of Museumplein (Oud-Zuid) | Concertgebouw, calm streets | Further from the center |
