Where to Stay in Amsterdam on a Budget

Amsterdam is not a cheap city to sleep in, but small canal hotels, newer hotels outside the ring and good hostels keep costs down. The trade-offs are usually stairs, small rooms or a tram or ferry ride.

The Short Answer

To stay central for less, book a small canal-house hotel and accept the stairs. Our pick is Hotel Hegra on the Herengracht, where every room has a private bathroom and triples and quads suit small groups. Hotel Clemens by the Westerkerk is a similar trade-off: a great location, but steep stairs and no elevator. The Singel Hotel puts you on a canal about five minutes' walk from Centraal.

For more space and a modern room, look outside the canals: the Volkshotel in Oost, or YOTEL and BUNK in Noord, across the IJ by free ferry or metro. For the cheapest beds, ClinkNOORD, the Generator and the Stayokay Vondelpark are well-located hostels. Pick a party hostel like the Flying Pig only if you want the nightlife.

Ways to Save in Amsterdam

  • Count the tourist tax. For 2026 the city charges 12.5% of the room price, excluding VAT, on top of the rate. Compare final totals, not headline prices.
  • Use the free ferries. The GVB ferries across the IJ from behind Centraal Station are free for pedestrians and cyclists, which makes a hotel in Noord an easy hop from the center.
  • Walk or bike. The center is compact and flat. Several budget hotels in this guide, including the Bicycle Hotel and the Conscious Hotel, rent bikes.
  • Tap in on trams. On GVB trams you can check in and out with a contactless bank card or phone (OVpay), so you don't need a separate ticket. Always check out when you leave.
  • Cook some meals. Studios at Hotel Résidence Le Coin have kitchenettes, and the Flying Pig has a guest kitchen.
  • Avoid the busiest dates. Hotels fill early for King's Day (April 27, or April 26 when the 27th is a Sunday), the Amsterdam Dance Event every October and big trade fairs at the RAI.
