Where to Stay in Amsterdam's Canal Ring

The Canal Ring (Grachtengordel) is the half-moon of 17th-century canals around the old center. Stay here for canal views and an easy walk to almost everything, and pick your stretch by how much nightlife noise you can take.

The Short Answer

Stay around the Nine Streets (De 9 Straatjes), the little shopping lanes that cross the Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht between the Raadhuisstraat and the Leidsegracht. It is the prettiest, most central part of the ring, and our pick there is the Pulitzer Amsterdam.

The western canals near the Westerkerk are a little quieter and put the Anne Frank House and the Jordaan on your doorstep. The eastern Herengracht, around the Golden Bend and Rembrandtplein, has the grandest mansions, including the Waldorf Astoria, but the bars on Rembrandtplein stay loud late. The Leidseplein end is the most convenient for trams to the Museum Quarter and the noisiest at night.

Stairs, Small Rooms and Noise

  • Stairs: canal houses were built narrow and tall, and their staircases are famously steep. The Amsterdam Wiechmann Hotel has no elevator, and smaller hotels often don't say either way, so ask before you book if anyone in your group has trouble with stairs or heavy bags. Hotel Estheréa has lifts to every room.
  • Room size: rooms in historic buildings vary a lot, even within one hotel. The cheapest categories are often small and may look onto a courtyard rather than the canal.
  • Noise: canal-side rooms get boat and street noise, and rooms near Rembrandtplein and Leidseplein hear the bars. Ask for a garden-side room if you sleep lightly.

Getting Around the Canal Ring

  • On foot: the ring is made for walking. From the Nine Streets, Dam Square, the Anne Frank House and the Jordaan are all a short stroll.
  • By tram: trams cross the ring on the Raadhuisstraat, the Leidsestraat and the Vijzelstraat, linking it with Centraal Station and the Museum Quarter. The Hoxton, for example, has a tram stop about two minutes away and is about 15 minutes on foot from Centraal Station.
  • From Schiphol: take the train to Centraal Station (about 15–17 minutes), then walk or take a tram. Bus 397 from the airport stops at Leidseplein, which is handy for the southern end of the ring.
